The Problem With Marin’s Old Private Laterals: Stormwater enters cracks and breaks in laterals (as shown above), manholes and other places. The stormwater, mixes with sewage, increasing volumes 1000% or more. This overloads sewer pipelines and treatment plants, leading to spills, environmental harm and costly fines and cleanup bills.
A group of nine local wastewater agencies - members of the North Bay Watershed Association -- is working together to help homeowners and businesses inspect and fix their privately owned sewer laterals to protect their homes, health and environment, as well as saving money.
